A mass vaccination of household poultry was launched in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan on Thursday
A mass vaccination of household poultry was launched in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan on Thursday, sources from the local veterinary department told Tass. They said 1.7 million dozes of vaccine against bird flu have already been received and are now distributed among the population. First batches of vaccine will go to the households, where domestic birds have contacts with water reservoirs, and to the poultry farms where no bird flu cases have been registered, the head of the veterinary department, Zaidin Dzhambulatov, said. These are the so-called “endangered territories,” he explained. Bird flu has been registered in 26 settlements of Dagestan. Quarantine has already been lifted from five of them. About 800,000 chickens and other domestic birds have died or have been destroyed in the republic. No new cases of the H5N1 strain of bird flu have been registered in the republic over the past week, Dzhambulatov said. “As far as we can see, the disease is subsiding, which is first of all connected with the warming,” he noted. The spring arrival of migratory birds has not aggravated the situation as of yet, he said. As for the economic damage from poultry deaths, it amounts to at least several hundred million roubles. The issue of compensations has not been solved as of yet. The republican budget has no such money to indemnify the households against their losses.
