The international airport Sheremetyevo in the Russian capital has launched a major reconstruction of its airfield complex
The international airport Sheremetyevo in the Russian capital has launched a major reconstruction of its airfield complex. The airport’s press service told Itar-Tass on Thursday the work will be carried out in two stages. The Sheremetyevo airport reconstruction will make it possible to considerably increase its capacity and bring it up to 23-25 million passengers a year. At the first stage in 2006 the airport’s runway No. 2 will be fully reconstructed. The work is financed from the federal budget. The reconstruction so far does not require the introduction of changes to the flight schedule. The result of the work will be a 20-percent increase in the airport’s capacity. The runway No. 2 was built in 1978 and only planned repair work was conducted at it in ever since. The second stage of the reconstruction envisages the building of a new runway, No. 1 and adherent taxiways. The second stage work may take three or four years.
