The State Duma lower house of the Russian parliament expressed concern over the aggravation of the situation around Moldova's breakaway Dniester region
The State Duma lower house of the Russian parliament expressed concern over the aggravation of the situation around Moldova's breakaway Dniester region, after Ukraine and Moldova introduced a new customs regime on the border. The Russian lawmakers said in a statement that the actions by Ukrainian and Moldovan authorities are causing a large-scale damage to the Dniester region's economy and may result in a "humanitarian catastrophe," with the region's population as its victims. The State Duma reminded that Russian and Ukrainian citizens make up a considerable portion of the Dniester region's population. In the opinion of Russian lawmakers, Ukraine and Moldova violate their promises not to use economic sanctions against the Dniester region and establish a new regime for cross-border movement of goods only with the participation of Dniester region authorities.
