The present crisis in the Dniester area “should be discussed jointly if all the participants in the process are interested in preserving stability”
The present crisis in the Dniester area “should be discussed jointly if all the participants in the process are interested in preserving stability”, said on Tuesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to the minister, statements appeared now that “the economic blockade of the breakaway Dniester republic is a concoction of the local authorities and that it was created by the Dniester authorities which do not wish to show contraband, including manufactured arms”. “Representatives of the Russian and Ukrainian security councils visited the Dniester republic and inspected jointly enterprises, suspected of contraband. They did not find anything suspicious,” the minister noted. He expressed conviction that the deputy secretary of the Ukrainian Security Council reported his leadership of the above results. “Therefore, it is at least strange to hear such accusations,” Lavrov emphasized. According to the Russian minister, “the social and economic situation in the region continues to deteriorate. People experience growing inconveniences. Incidentally, not only those who live there, but also those who are engaged in trade relations with the Dniester republic and even those who just try to go there”. “There are reports about shut-downs of enterprises in the self-proclaimed republic over a shortage of supplies which were blocked by the new methods of Ukraine and Moldova,” Lavrov noted. He stressed that “these measures violate the 1997 Memorandum which was signed by Ukraine and Moldova, providing for free foreign economic operations in the Dniester area”. “Russia will not disregard the situation in the Dniester area and will prod the sides to return to the existing understandings,” Lavrov assured. “We shall not leave the present situation in the Dniester area as it is and shall strive for returning the sides to the existing understandings, including the statement by the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, made last December on this question,” the minister continued. “The present measures on the economic blockade of the Dniester area are at variance with this statement,” Lavrov underlined. “We shall not leave this situation as it is.”
