Ukraine's president has set up a new body to deal with the country's accession to NATO
Ukraine's president has set up a new body to deal with the country's accession to NATO, the presidential press service said Tuesday. A decree signed by Viktor Yuschenko says the commission, headed by First Deputy Foreign Minister Anton Buteiko, can establish working groups to deal with specific aspects of working with NATO. Officials at deputy-minister level, including the deputy chairman of the National Security and Defense Council, have been appointed to oversee the working groups. Ukraine has repeatedly expressed its intention to follow other Eastern European nations by joining NATO and the EU. Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Khandogiy previously mentioned 2008 as a possible date for NATO accession. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov earlier said that Ukraine's joining NATO could lead to domestic instability in the country.
