A group of soccer fans attacked a group of foreign students in St. Petersburg last night, mistaking the students for supporters of the Olympic Marseille Club that played against Zenit in the UEFA qualifier for the UEFA Cup. The game ended in a draw. The incident took place inside the Sadovaya metro station in the city center. A group of Zenit fans numbering ten - fifteen tough guys surrounded the foreigners, asking if they were French nationals. The Russian fans could not make out what the foreigners said in reply because of poor Russian, but they attacked the foreigners and beat them up. The foreigners who suffered in the incident complained to police. Police said the foreigners received inconsiderable injuries in the incident, and none of them needed hospital treatment. An inquiry into the incident and search for the Russian hooligans continues. After the game police detained around sixty fans for violation of public order and drinking alcohol in a public place. One of the fans detained was charged with theft of a mobile telephone. A 120-strong group of Olympic Marseille fans arrived at St. Petersburg airport and boarded a flight to France without incidents.
