President Vladimir Putin wrapped up the official part of his two-day trip to China Wednesday
President Vladimir Putin wrapped up the official part of his two-day trip to China Wednesday, saying he was pleased with the results. "This visit looks very impressive indeed against the background of dynamically developing Russian-Chinese relations," Putin said at a meeting with Chinese parliament speaker Wu Bangguo. "Not only is [the visit] full of specific documents, but it is also highly pragmatic and aimed at strengthening political relations." He said the current rapprochement in Russia-China relations was largely due to the friendly political climate of recent years, while also stressing the importance of economic cooperation. "Trade and economic ties are the foundation of our relations," he said, adding that the two governments must do their best to promote cooperation between their countries' business communities. Chinese officials were equally upbeat about the results of the visit. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said Putin's talks with President Hu Jintao had been "productive," and that Sino-Russian relations were at their highest since the two nations signed their Friendship and Cooperation Treaty five years ago. Parliamentary speaker Wu described Putin's visit as businesslike. "I can say your visit [has been ] businesslike throughout, with a lot of agreements signed," he said at Wednesday's talks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the visit had been comprehensive. "President Vladimir Putin's visit to China reemphasized the high level of strategic partnership and outlined specific plans for comprehensive development of bilateral relations," he said. "It proved the irreversibility of our strategic partnership and gave it concrete and practical substance." Before returning to Moscow, Putin, a black belt in judo, will fly to the Chinese town of Shaolin, regarded as the birthplace of the martial art kung fu.
