Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in the Chinese Shaolin Temple
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in the Chinese Shaolin Temple, situated not far from the city of Dengfeng in the Henan province. Abbot of Shaolin, Shi Yongxing, met the Russian leader at the Mountain Gate of the monastery, used on festive occasions. There are two more entrances on the southern fa?ade, to the left and to the right of the Mountain Gate, which are used in everyday life. President Putin has become the first among the incumbent world leaders to visit the Chinese Shaolin Temple. “This was the president’s idea to go to Shaolin during his visit to China,” Putin’s aide Sergei Prikhodko told Tass on Tuesday. Putin is a fan of martial arts and is a black belt judo expert himself. Shaolin, founded 1,511 years ago, was last rebuilt in the 1980s. It has seen a lot of restoration work over the past few years. The temple has preserved its ancient traditions. Its monks get up at 4 am and have daily six-hour trainings. There are about 100 monks at the monastery. Over one million tourists visit Shaolin every year. Monks stage picturesque performances for the visitors, demonstrating once secret combat styles.
