China is a key element in Russia’s strategy to diversify energy supplies to the world market
China is a key element in Russia’s strategy to diversify energy supplies to the world market, Russian Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko said. Speaking at the Russian-Chinese economic forum on Wednesday, Khristenko said China “is a key element in Russia’s strategy on diversifying energy carriers supplies to the world market.” In his words, a package of documents on Russian-Chinese economic cooperation “proves of strategic partnership between companies of the two countries on oil supplies and the joint development of oil deposits in Russia, China and other world countries.” Russian and Chinese businessmen “agreed to take part in and share risks of energy projects in all key fields,” the minister stressed. To this end, Khristrenko pointed out that Russian-Chinese interaction in oil and gas supplies “plays an important role in reducing risks of global energy security.” The Russian minister said the year 2006 “will prove to be decisive for the promotion of Russian-Chinese cooperation in energy”. “At the end of the year, we shall witness a new pattern of bilateral relations in the field of energy.” He specially underscored “the importance of the fact that a new area of cooperation was opened – the area of natural gas”. “It may eventually be supplemented by cooperation to produce liquefied gas on the Russian shelf,” he believes. Khristenko said he is convinced that the Chinese market “is potentially big enough to boost the demand for this product”.
