A health ministry official said Thursday that almost 32,000 people had died of tuberculosis in Russia in 2005
A health ministry official said Thursday that almost 32,000 people had died of tuberculosis in Russia in 2005. "TB-related deaths have grown," Yekaterina Kakorina said. "In 2005, almost 32,000 people died. The death rate [of TB] is 22.1 per 100,000 people, compared to 21.4 per 100,000 in 2004." A total of 120,000 TB cases were registered in Russia last year. Kakorina said incidence and mortality rates were three to four times higher than average in some regions, adding that Koryak Autonomous District and the republics of Tuva and Altai were the worst problem areas. She also said the incidence of drug-resistant TB had grown to about 8% of total TB cases.
