Construction of a shipping canal between the Danube and the Black Sea began Tuesday in the Odessa region
The canal will permit 60% of the Danube's cargo traffic to reach the Danube delta in Ukraine. Currently, only 2% of river transport reaches the delta, while Rumania enjoys a monopoly on cargo and passenger shipping. The cost of the project is expected to be USD 29 million. The Ukrainian National Science Academy and local and international ecologists have spoken out against the canal's construction, saying it would destroy the Danube's unique biosphere, which has been listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
