About 13 million birds have been vaccinated against bird flu in Russia, sources from the information department at the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations told Tass on Tuesday. The vaccination of domestic poultry began on March 10 in southern Russia, ”but at the present moment vaccination is carried out in Moscow as well as in 47 regions of the Southern, Volga River, Siberian, Central and Far Eastern federal districts,” the sources said. Ministry specialists said epizooty situation might aggravate in April “in connection with the spread of bird flu (its H5B1 strain) across the whole Russia”. They said that from February 3 to March 28, 2006, over 1.3 million domestic birds had to be destroyed or died of bird flu in southern Russia. An outbreak of bird flu was registered in Russia’s southern Dagestan, Kalmykia, Adygeya, Chechnya, Kabardino Balkaria, as well as in the Stavropol, Krasnodar, Astrakhan and Volgograd regions.
