Russian citizen Vitaly Kaloyev saying that he would prefer to serve his sentence in Russia
Russian citizen Vitaly Kaloyev, whom the Zurich Canton Supreme Court had sentenced to eight years of jail, addressed an appeal to the Swiss authorities five months afterwards, saying that he would prefer to serve his sentence in Russia, Head of the North Ossetia-Alania Republic of Russia Taimuraz Mamsurov told the newspaper “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” (Independent Gazette). Kaloyev “has referred his consent to the corresponding Swiss authorities,” Mamsurov stated, adding that he could be handed over to Russia before the year is up. A special inter-state agreement is now being drawn up. The sentence to Kaloyev has not come into legal force yet. According to the Swiss legislation, this can happen only after all the appeal procedures are over. The Russian Justice Ministry, jointly with the Russian Foreign Ministry, are already working on Vitaly Kaloyev’s transfer to Russia. The official reason for this was Taimuraz Mamsurov’s appeal, which he had submitted to Russian Justice Minister Yuri Chaika in mid-March. Vitaly Kaloyev, a 49-year-old building engineer from Vladikavkaz, was sentenced in Switzerland for stabbing to death “Skyguide” air dispatcher Peter Nilsen, whose error is believed to have caused the July 2, 2002, collision of a “Tu-154” passenger liner of the “Bashkirian Airlines” with a “Boeing-757” transport plane of the DHL trans-national company over Lake Boden. As a result, seventy-one people were killed, including Kaloyev’s family -- wife, daughter and son. The Zurich Court found Kaloyev guilty of intentional murder on October 26, 2005, and sentenced him to eight years of jail.
