Russia has to double its import duties on foodstuffs by the time it joins the World Trade Organization
Russia has to double its import duties on foodstuffs by the time it joins the World Trade Organization, Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev said at a meeting with activists of the local branch of United Russia party in Ussuriisk. "Our stance at the WTO talks is that we should have the right to support agriculture, and also raise, by approximately two-fold, the import duties," he noted. Moscow's position encounters "powerful resistance on the part of the United States," which is acting "on its own or through other WTO members." In Gordeyev's view, Russia cannot follow the way of Ukraine, which "fully surrendered its positions" to the detriment of its economy. "The United States will sign a protocol with Ukraine soon /on its accession to WTO/ with solely one purpose - to make Kiev a negotiator in Russia's WTO talks." In the minister's view, "it's a diversionary maneuver with the purpose of making Slav brothers collide with each other head on." "When we ask partners in the negotiations why do you set such terms for us, since you yourself joined under other terms, they frankly tell us that "we're already on train, and you've got to buy a ticket. We bought for three kopeks, while the price for you is 3,000 roubles," Gordeyev said
