Disagreements between Russia and the European Union should not be an obstacle to mutual cooperation
Disagreements between Russia and the European Union should not be an obstacle to mutual cooperation, Russia's foreign minister said Wednesday. Sergei Lavrov told Slovakian President Ivan Gasparovic at a meeting in the Slovak capital that disagreements over issues like Belarus and Ukraine should not stall joint work with NATO and the EU. "We hold similar positions on a wide range of issues and our views differ on some other issues. There is nothing unnatural in that," Lavrov said. He added that disagreements should not be blown up and seen as an obstacle to cooperation, and that Russia had always worked to bring its positions closer with the EU and NATO positions. Gasparovic echoed Lavrov's sentiments, but also said that Slovakia - as a member of NATO and the EU - should abide by the organizations' official opinions and positions.
