Manoeuvres of Russia’s long-range aviation were launched in the Far East on Tuesday. Head of the manoeuvres, Commander of the Russian Federation Air Forces’ 37th Strategic Air Army Lieutenant-General Igor Khvorov told journalists, “The plans of the exercise have been worked out with taking into account the most responsible and complicated aviation tasks in extreme conditions with the use of all possibilities of aircraft equipment.” “Two aircraft Tu-95MS will fly today on the route in the Pacific water area and four crews - in the area of the Aleutian Islands with landing on a trans-Polar aerodrome in Anadyr,” said Khvorov. According to him, “We permanently perform flights in northern latitudes. The peculiarity of the current flights is that all tasks are fulfilled in complex and large forces and equipment are employed in the manoeuvres.” The commander also said that “the An-50 and Il-22 aircraft are used for flight control and ensuring their security, the other aircraft equipment, flight commanders are staying in special command posts and duty officers are on constant alert.” “We don’t link our actions to a specific enemy,” Khvorov said. “The aim of the exercise is to check the crews of the strategic aircraft divisions regarding their piloting, navigation and missile launching skills,” the commander noted. “The area of the manoeuvres is vast and the weather conditions there are very adverse and quickly changing,” he added. According to General Khvorov, “The pilots will have to several times cross various weather fronts along their routes.” “The pilots are even searching for bad weather, they value it, because their actions in extreme conditions are taken into account during their qualification procedure,” Khvorov stressed.
