About 6,000 people died and some 4,000 were injured as a result of fires in the Russian Federation in the first three months of the year, an official at the Information Department of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies Situations has said. Some 55,000 fires occurred in the country during the period under review, the official said, adding that their number slightly reduced as against the same period of the last year. The total number of fire-related victims went down by five percent and the number of fatalities among children fell 21.1 percent. However, the fire damage is still high. “Total fire damage exceeds 1.5 billion roubles since the beginning of the year,” the ministry official said. At the same time, fire-fighters have managed to rescue about 30,000 people and saved material valuables on a total sum of some seven billion roubles. According to the ministry, a certain increase in the number of fires was registered in the Southern, Northwest and Central federal districts. The most complicated situation was in regions of Adygei, Dagestan, Kalmykia, Karachai-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Ingushetia and Chechnya, as well as in the Bryansk, Voronezh, Kaliningrad, Moscow, Omsk, Oryol, Rostov and Chita regions and in the Komi-Permyak and Nenets autonomous districts. “The biggest number of fires still broke out in residential areas,” the official said. “Human factor is still among the main causes of fires in Russia.
