Russia’s accession to WTO carries a threat of its losing its food security
Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) carries a threat of its losing its food security, Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov said. “If Russia joins the WTO, we shall increasingly plunge into the deep of imports, and this means that we shall lose our food independence,” he said at the All-Russia forum “Agrarian Future of Russia” on Wednesday. Luzhkov said that Russia’s proportion in world exports would decrease with the accession to the WTO from 1.3 percent to 1 percent and import volumes would increase from 1.9 percent to 2.3 percent. “The World Trade Organization is interested in Russia, which has a grandiose market, becoming one of its members. We want to be in the system of trade civilization, but only on conditions declared by us,” he said.
