Over 780 people were evacuated from the villages of Tilichiki and Korf
A total of 782 people were evacuated from the villages of Tilichiki and Korf, the hardest hit by the earthquake on April 21 in the Koryak Autonomous Area. The evacuation of people who needed this, has been completed. Mostly women, children and patients have been evacuated from the calamity zone, Itar-Tass learnt on Tuesday from department director of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies Gennady Korotkin who is now in Tilichiki, directing work of the crisis center, set up by the Ministry for Emergencies. The situation in the stricken area can be “described as difficult but controllable”, Korotkin noted. “The head of the area administration organized work well, put specialists at their right places who continue restoration work,” the department head noted. According to the general, “electricity was virtually supplied to all villages”. The task is now being tackled to supply heat to dwelling houses. It is necessary to prepare water intakes for work. Central heating in Tilichiki and Korf can be restored in the near future. Appraising the state of the housing stock, Korotkin noted that those are mostly log houses which withstood the quake, and they can be turned over for occupancy if properly repaired”. He noted that a commission of specialists from interested ministries and departments, which will come from Moscow to the area, will give a skilled estimate of buildings and inflicted damage. Following this, a decision will be taken on restoring projects. Korotkin noted that work on restoring vital facilities in the stricken villages is planned to be completed within ten days.
