A total of 401 buildings were damaged in three settlements of the Koryak Autonomous Area hit by a powerful earthquake on April 21. A special commission is assessing their condition and possible restoration, the press centre of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s main department for the Kamchatka region told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. In the Tilichiki settlement 140 residential houses, one school, two hospitals, two kindergartens and runway of the local aerodrome were damaged. In the Korf settlement the quake damaged 94 buildings and 65 of them are beyond repair. Chimneys of heating stoves in 152 houses fell in the Khailino settlement and two local buildings are beyond repair, including a school. Life support systems were damaged in the affected settlements. According to preliminary assessment of the district administration, the total damage from the calamity is 1.5 billion roubles. Restoration efforts are underway in the quake-stricken settlements. Electric power supply to houses is being restored under temporary schemes. Work to restore water and heating supply, as well as communication lines between the settlements of the Olyutorsky district of the autonomy is continuing. Evacuation of people who wanted to move from the quake zone has been completed. Some 800 people, mostly children, women, elderly and the sick have been evacuated from the calamity zone. The affected settlement’s life support systems are planned to be restored within 10 days. The earthquake aftermath liquidation efforts are coordinated by the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s response headquarters set up in the Tilichiki under the command of the ministry’s task force chief Gennady Korotkin. The powerful earthquake occurred in the autonomy on April 21. The magnitude of the first tremor, according to various estimates, was from 7.3 to 7.9 points on the Richter scale. Seismic activity in the quake epicentre located in the Koryak Highlands in the area of the Olyutorsky cape is currently subsiding, scientists point out. No earthquakes with force over 3.5 on the Richter scale have occurred there since Saturday evening, the Kamchatka experimental seismic crew said. The humanitarian relief supplies for the Koryak autonomy are continuing to the Kamchatka Peninsula. It has been decided to give the residents of the affected districts 1,000 roubles each. After the damage caused by the quake to the houses is assessed they will be able to receive compensations worth from 20,000 to 50,000 roubles, governor of the Koryak Autonomous Area Oleg Kozhemyako told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
