Children’s rights commissioners will appear in 45 regions of Russia by 2010
Children’s rights commissioners will appear in 45 regions of Russia by 2010, representative of UNICEF in Russia and Belarus Karel de Roy said at the presentation of the book “Institute of children’s rights commissioners in Russia” which was held at ITAR-TASS on Thursday. At present children’s rights commissioners work in only 18 regions of the country, and by the end of 2007 their number will be 28. They don’t interfere with the activity of the existing bodies of control and trusteeship, but interact with them. Commissioners provide children with housing, control granting of allowances to them, defend their rights in the passport and visa service and participate in adopting new regional programmes and local legislative acts. The introduction of the institution of children’s rights commissioners in all Russia is an important for bettering children’s life in Russia, member of the Russian Public Chamber Leonid Roshal, who attended the presentation ceremony, believes.
