As many as 775 houses where 2185 people live are still flooded in the Altai city of Biisk
As many as 775 houses where 2185 people, including 610 women and 354 children, live are still flooded in the Altai city of Biisk. The water level on the Biya River in the city keeps going down and made 467 centimeters with the critical level of 420 centimeters at 08.00 local time (05.00 Moscow time). The flood situation in Biisk is under control, the Altai emergencies department told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. “The situation remains difficult. The power supply is cut off in the flooded houses out of security, people spend nights on the attic because of the fears of looting, cut the small livestock and poultry that they could not take away to the safe place. Door-to-door raids on boats, the evacuation of sick people, the aid to people in the flooded houses and the provision of them with foodstuffs and prime necessities remain the most important issues today,” a source in the Biisk mayor’s office said. Specialists do not rule out the second onslaught of the flood. The riverbank reinforcement works and the elimination of the flood aftermath are underway in the city. The Defence Ministry assigned 100 servicemen and 13 pieces of machinery from the forty-first army of the Siberian military district to help the rescuers. As many as 785 people and more than 200 vehicles are involved in the rescue operation. Meanwhile, the flood situation in the district center Bystry Istok was put under control of the Altai regional emergencies department. Over 370 countryside gardens and houses with the population of about 1,000 people got in the flood area, after the water level on the Biya River in Bystry Istok has reached 318 centimeters with the critical level of 280 centimeters. According to forecasts of the specialists, Verkhne-Ozernoye and Ust-Anuy are expected to be flooded in the Bystry Istok region in the next three days. “The measures are being taken under the plan of eliminating emergency situations in natural disasters,” the emergencies department said. “A threat of an emergency situation emerged in Barnaul,” the regional emergencies department emphasized. In particular, 36 countryside gardens were flooded in Zaton, a Barnaul suburb, on Wednesday morning. The water level on the Ob River in the city reached 530 centimeters with the critical level of 520 centimeters. “The water level keeps rising and when it reaches 550 centimeters houses in the settlements of Zaton and Ilyicha will be flooded,” the emergencies department pointed out. According to Barnaul Vice-Mayor Yuri Petrov, “the city administration has taken all necessary measures to minimize the damage from the flood. All organizational measures were taken, money for the anti-flood measures were assigned.” “Now it is important that people will react correctly to the information about the flood situation and will not ignore our recommendations,” Petrov indicated.
