Over 54,000 houses were destroyed in Chechnya during the period of combat operations
A total of 54,967 houses were destroyed in Chechnya during the period of combat operations. The full list will be submitted to the federal centre in the near future, the secretary of the Chechen government’s committee for compensation payment, Sultan Isakov, told Itar-Tass on Friday. After the Russian Ministry for Development of Regions considers the list, which was compiled under Chechen President Alu Alkhanov's directions, a decision will be taken to allocate funds to the republic for compensation payments. In 2003, 15.3 billion roubles were paid to 43,903 people in Chechnya. Each of them received 350,000 roubles -- 300,000 for the destroyed homes and 50 for the lost property. Officers of the Migration Service, the Interior Ministry and the Chechen Prosecutor's Office checked the applications, and about 25 percent of the applications were rejected, Isakov noted. The Chechen government plans to complete the work to pay compensations for destroyed houses and lost property by mid-2007, he added.
