The fourth meeting of the All-Abroad Council of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad finished in San Francisco on Sunday
The fourth meeting of the All-Abroad Council of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA) finished in San Francisco on Sunday. A divine liturgy and a service have been read in the Cathedral of Consolation of the Afflicted on this occasion. Fulfilling the order the ROCA Hierarchal Synod, the delegates to the meeting have discussed the “establishment of normal relations between the Churches in Russia and Abroad, and the mission and service of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in the modern world”. The former question has drawn most of interest and debate. Debate over a proposed wording of a resolution on the relations even has caused a one-day delay in passing this important document. After all, a resolution was worked out taking into account different points of view, for which the delegates voted practically unanimously. The farther superior of the Cathedral of Transfiguration of the Saviour in Los Angeles, Archpriest Alexei Lebedev, who is the secretary of the ROCA commission on talks with the Moscow Patriarchy, said that the main idea of the document was that “we all aspire for the unity of the Russian Church”. The resolution in particular says: “We, archpastors, pastors and laymen, members of the 4th All-Abroad Council unanimously express the resolve to heal the wounds of the division within the Russian Church – between its parts in the Fatherland and abroad. Our Easter joy is accompanied by the great hope that at a favourable time for this, the unity will be restored on the basis of the Truth of Christ, the unity in the Russian Church opening for us a possibility to serve together and partake of one cup.” The Council has passed several other documents, but a final decision to approve or not approve an act on the restoration of the canonical unity of the Russian Church is to be passed by the Assembly of Hierarchs that opens in San Francisco on Monday
