The Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church jointly develop a concept on human rights from the point of view of morality
The Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church jointly develop a concept on human rights from the point of view of morality. “At a meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and Metropolitan Cyril, the sides confirmed readiness to continue joint work towards drawing up a document, which would fully reflect the position of the Roman Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church in the sphere of rights, dignity and moral responsibility of the person,” the deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external relations, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin told Tass on Friday. According to him, work on developing a common approach to that problem has already been in progress for several years “in the course of inter-church contacts”. He noted that the Russian Orthodox Church had already presented a declaration on human rights and dignity to the World Russian People’s Council in April. During the work of the international conference in Vienna, organized by the Holy See in cooperation with Moscow Patriarchate, the document was considered in detail by Catholic and Orthodox hierarchs, theologians, public activists and scientists, Vsevolod Chaplin said. He stressed that many ideas of that declaration were in line with the position of the Vatican, and there is hope that the two Churches “will come out with a common message to the world public, urging it to combine respect for human rights and protection of the value of the human life,” he said. “This is necessary so that the society remembers the importance of moral education and observance of moral norms in policy, economy, culture and media,” he stressed. The archpriest also expressed hope that “the meeting of Pope Benedict XVI and Metropolitan Cyril will give a new impetus to that joint work”.
