Rostelecom has launched a fiber-optic data transmission line to link Russia's Far East and China
Rostelecom (RTS: RTKM) has launched a fiber-optic data transmission line to link Russia's Far East and China, a company official said Tuesday. Russia's largest long-distance telecom services provider Friday said it had connected Russian and European networks in the rapidly developing Far East region with those of China Telecom, China's largest fixed service telecommunications provider, linking the Amur Region's cities of Belogorsk and Blagoveshchensk with the Chinese city of Heihe on the Russian border. "The new fiber-optic transmission line Belogorsk-Blagoveshchensk-China will provide a fast and high-quality communications link not only for Russia and China, but also for Europe and Asia-Pacific countries," said Ivan Zima, the director of Rostelecom branch in Russia's Far East. He added that the customers would now have access to a variety of telecoms services, including Internet, voice and data transmission, and videoconferencing. Rostelecom said the project was exceptionally important as the traffic between Europe and Asia is expected to triple by 2010
