Yevgeny Adamov suffered a heart attack
The Federal Service for Execution of Punishments confirmed on Thursday that former Atomic Energy Minister Yevgeny Adamov, who is kept in custody at Matrossakaya Tishina detention center in Moscow, suffered a heart attack. Adam felt sick at around 3.30 a.m. Thursday. He complained of chest pains and pressed an emergency button. Prison guards called a doctor, Alexander Sidorov, a representative of the Federal Service for Execution of Sentences, told Tass. Adamov was given medical assistance, and there is no threat to his life at present. The ex-minister has heart problems and suffers from similar heart attacks approximately every two months, Sidorov said. Investigating formalities and Adamov’s consultations with his lawyers have been suspended because of his condition, Sidorov said. Adamov’s lawyers insist that Adamov should be released from custody because of poor health, Henry Reznik, one of Adamov’s lawyers, said in a live broadcast on Ekho Moskvy Radio on Thursday, " We believe that Adamov should be immediately released. He is in deplorable condition," Reznik said, Adamov suffered a third heart attack since he was taken into custody, the lawyer said. He did not rule out that the life of the 67- year old ex-minister was under threat. Yevgeny Adamov was extradited to Moscow from Switzerland on December 31, 2005. The Prosecutor’s General Office charged Adamov with fraud and abuse of office. Adamov has been kept in custody for more than a year. He was detained in Switzerland on a U.S. warrant on May 2, 2005 for illegal appropriation of nine million dollars the U.S. allocated for nuclear security projects in Russia. Afterwards, the Russian Prosecutor’s General Office opened a criminal case against Adamov. The Moscow city court prolonged Adamov’s term in custody until July 8.
