Russia hopes Iran will positively respond to the “serious proposals” of six world powers
Russia hopes Iran will positively respond to the “serious proposals” of six world powers to resume negotiations and suspend the discussion of its nuclear issue in the UN Security Council if Tehran stops uranium enrichment. “Russia hopes Iran will respond to the proposal of the six countries and will sit down at the negotiating table,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday commenting on the results of the ministerial meeting of Russia, China, the United States, France, Great Britain and Germany. “At the new talks with Iran a decision will be drafted for the benefit of peaceful nuclear power engineering, and simultaneously the nuclear non-proliferation regime will be observed,” the minister stressed. Lavrov said proposals to Iran were accepted unanimously and go along three guidelines – the Iranian nuclear program; trade, economic and political issues; as well as security. He refused to elaborate saying “until there is an Iranian response, nobody would detail the proposals to Iran,” Lavrov said. The Russian minister praised the United States for agreeing to negotiate with Iran. “Russia has made its proposals and today the collective effort yielded result. The proposals were supported by all countries, including the United States. It was not an easy step for them, as there have been no relations between the United States and Iran for 26 years”, Lavrov said. “The Russian role in new negotiations is very important. From the very beginning Russia supported the efforts of the European troika, which launched negotiations with Iran. They were later joined by Russia, China and the United States. But it was all aimed at drafting the position, not at participating in the talks”, the minister said. He said the foreign ministers of the six countries “reached an agreement to make serious proposals to Iran on the settlement of the situation on the basis of suspending by Tehran of uranium enrichment, as it is demanded by the IAEA, and in case of a corresponding response to suspend the consideration of the Iranian dossier in the UN Security Council”.
