Vladimir Putin:“Development of Russia’s relations with Muslim states is one of foreign policy priorities”
The “development of Russia’s relations with Muslim states is one of foreign policy priorities,” Vladimir Putin said meeting Organization of the Islamic Conference Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ishanoglu on Wednesday. “Russia is certain that the world’s split on account of creed would be far more risky than the ideological split that existed in the ‘cold war’ era,” he said. The Organization of the Islamic Conference is prepared to do everything in its powers to help Russia secure the release of its diplomats taken hostage in Iraq, OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said. “The taking of Russian diplomats in Baghdad hostage runs counter to the tradition of Muslim and Arab hospitality and any principles of international law,” Ihsanoglu said. “We reacted with deep regret to the news Russian diplomats in Baghdad had been taken hostage. We condemn this act as a crime against humanity and international law.” In the June 3 attack on a Russian diplomatic car in Baghdad by militants one member of the Russian embassy staff, Vitaly Titov, was gunned down and the four other Russians – the embassy’s third secretary Fyodor Zaitsev and staff members Rinat Agliulin, Anatoly Smirnov and Oleg Fedoseyev were taken away to an unknown destination. They have remained unaccounted for since.
