Sochi Mayor Viktor Kolodyazhny looks upon Russia's aspirations to host the 2014 Winter Olympics with optimism
Sochi Mayor Viktor Kolodyazhny looks upon Russia's aspirations to host the 2014 Winter Olympics with optimism. Russia’s chances to host the 2014 Olympics are good enough, the Sochi mayor said in an interview published by Nezavisimaya Gazeta on Friday. A working group and the IOC Executive Board will meet in Lausanne on June 21-23 to make a preliminary choice between the cities claiming the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The city of Sochi, a Russian health resort on the Black sea cost, is one of the contestants. "Sochi has unique opportunities as a venue for sports event held on such a big scale. The very idea of holding the winter games in a place with subtropical climate is attractive. Guests and contestants will be able to arrive to the Winter Games either on private yachts or cruise ships, which is rather unusual. Olympic facilities situated close to each other will make it possible to reach any of them maximum within an hour," the mayor said. He shares the view that the wish to host the Winter Olympics presupposes upgrading the city to an international level. "Sochi is a city for all seasons. The only subtropical region in Russia should by right be the main health resort. As for the international standards, unfortunately one cannot say yet that it is an accomplished fact, " the city mayor admitted. He called to create an industry of entertainments in the city so that people should like visiting Sochi similar to festivals in Italy, Spain or Brazil.
