One hunger striker was hospitalized at the Biryusinsky hydrolysis plant in the Irkutsk region
One hunger striker was hospitalized at the Biryusinsky hydrolysis plant in the Irkutsk region. The hunger strike has already been going on for three weeks, a source in the Biryusinsk mayor’s office told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. Thirty workers of the plant went on a hunger strike, and another 12 workers joined them later. One of the female hunger strikers was hospitalized due to the deterioration of health. The hunger strikers demand the repayment of the wage arrears and the resumption of the operation at the plant. In the beginning of June some wage debts were repaid from the funds allocated by the regional administration. Another 3.5 million roubles should be paid. The situation with the operation of the plant is more difficult. The operation at the plant was suspended in the end of November 2005 over the absence of a license for the production of alcohol and alcoholic products, and the bankruptcy procedure was launched at the plant. It was already announced that most workers or about 400 people would be fired before July 1. Only those who will protect the plant’s property, and workers of the boiler house, sewage treatment works, who service not only the plant, but also the city will keep working.
