Al-Qaeda-related extremist group on Monday claimed responsibility for taking hostage two American servicemen
An Al-Qaeda-related extremist group on Monday claimed responsibility for taking hostage two American servicemen. Several minutes later it posted a statement on the Internet claiming responsibility for kidnapping four Russian diplomats in Iraq. The four Russian diplomats were kidnapped in Baghdad on June 3. “The Lions of Monotheism have arrested four Russian diplomats in Iraq and killed the fifth one,” the statement said. “Our brothers from the armed wing of the Mujahideen Shura Council have abducted two American soldiers near Yusufia” south of Baghdad, an earlier statement said. Mujahideen Shura Council is an Iraqi network, which incorporates several extremist groups, including Al Qaeda in Iraq. The credibility of the statements has not been confirmed yet, but the website used by the extremists regularly carries statements of Iraqi insurgents.
