The prosecutor for the state has finished the presentation of proofs in the lawmaker Starovoitova murder case. The trial is being held in St. Petersburg. The court adjourned until June 29. The defense will start presenting its proofs to the jury. The lawyers insist that the defendants had to motives to kill the lawmaker. Investigators believe that it the murder was politically motivated. The defendants are Pavel Stekhnovsky and Vyacheslav Lelyavin. The prosecutor for the state has had the floor since May 2006. Some 20 witnesses have been questioned since, and a large amount of materials have been presented. The investigators accused the defendants of involvement in shadowing Starovoitova and tapping her telephone in August-November 1998. Stekhnovsky is also accused of obtaining an assault rifle and three dozen rounds of ammunition for the attack on her. Criminal proceedings against Stekhnovsky and Lelyavin made a separate case and referred to court at a later date than the case against the main group of the accused, who were tried in June 2005. Stekhnovsky was detained in Belgium in the summer of 2004 and several months later extradited to Russia. Lelyavin was arrested in St. Petersburg in 2004. 2nd Duma lawmaker Galina Starovoitova was shot to death in St. Petersburg overnight to November 21, 1998 in the stairwell of her apartment house in Griboyedov Canal Street. Six natives of Russia's Bryansk region were charged with the murder, but just two of them were given prison terms. The investigation continues. Work is underway to establish the identities of the mastermind of the crime and another three suspects.
