Georgia's parliamentary speaker condemned Monday the killing of four Russian diplomats abducted by an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organization in Iraq
Georgia's parliamentary speaker condemned Monday the killing of four Russian diplomats abducted by an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organization in Iraq. The Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday that Fyodor Zaitsev, third secretary of the embassy, and diplomats Rinat Agliulin, Anatoly Smirnov and Oleg Fedoseyev had been murdered after being abducted by the Mujahideen Shura Council. Diplomat Vitaly Titov was killed during the initial attack on an embassy car in Baghdad on June 3. In response to the brutal murder of Russian diplomats, Nino Burjanidze condemned the killings and expressed condolences to the families and close friends of the deceased diplomats. "This inhuman crime, which does not have any justification, showed once again the violent nature of terrorism and the need for the entire international community to join efforts to fight it," she said in a letter addressed to the Russian parliament. On Sunday, Arab television channel Al Jazeera reported referring to an Internet statement made by al-Qaeda in Iraq that terrorists had executed the four employees of the Russian Embassy in revenge for what they claimed was "the torture, killing and expulsion of our brothers and sisters by the infidel Russian government" in Chechnya. Two of the diplomats are believed to have been beheaded and a third shot, but the circumstances of the fourth murder remain unclear.
