Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II on Wednesday held a remembrance service for the Russian diplomats who were taken hostage in Iraq and killed later
Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II on Wednesday held a remembrance service for the Russian diplomats who were taken hostage in Iraq and killed later. As he led a liturgy in the Assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin in commemoration of St Jonas the Metropolitan of Moscow, Alexy II chanted prayers “for repose in peace of slain diplomats from the Russian embassy in Baghdad,” the Patriarchate’s press office said. Alexy II said in a letter to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov the day before the crimes like the murder of Russian diplomats cannot be justified by whatever religious considerations. “As terrorists kill innocent people, they tear themselves away from any religion,” he said. “By dooming their victims to torture, they doom themselves to contempt on the part of all the people of good will and to damnation in the annals of history.”
