The second lap the “Baikal-2006” military exercise began on Tuesday in the eastern regions of Russia
The second lap the “Baikal-2006” military exercise began on Tuesday in the eastern regions of Russia. Chief of the Russian General Staff Yuri Baluyevsky commands the maneuvers. In line with the scenario, one of the tank regiments of constant combat readiness from the Siberian military district was alarmed and is making an over 1,000-kilometer-long march “in conditions of constant countereffort by subversive and terrorist groups,” sources from the press center of the war game told Tass on Tuesday. Echelons of command as well as units of the Federal Security Service, the Interior Ministry and the Ministry for Emergency Situations take part in the exercise. They solve large-scale tasks and train cooperation with civil authorities of all levels, the sources said. The commanders and staffs have to deal with close-to-practical-reality situations in the course of the exercise, “to constantly decide many quite extraordinary problems, requiring ingenious approaches, thorough calculations and well-motivated decisions,” the press center reported earlier. The territorial “Baikal-2006” exercise, which is being held according to plan, will last until July 6. It embraces a considerable part of Siberia and of the Trans-Baikal Region. Taking part in the maneuvers are approximately ten thousand servicemen and more than one and a half thousand units of combat materiel, as well as some structures and formations of the other Russian power ministries.
