Meeting between Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and leaders of parliamentary factions has been postponed indefinitely
A meeting between Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and leaders of parliamentary factions has been postponed indefinitely, an opposition faction member said Wednesday. In a bid to break the deadlock that has all paralyzed legislative work since the March 26 elections, Yushchenko has been seeking to meet with representatives of the new parliamentary coalition and the opposition Party of Regions, which won most votes in the poll but has blocked parliament's work since June 27 after being frozen out of the coalition. "We have learnt that the meeting with the president has been postponed indefinitely," Raisa Bogatyryova from the Party of Regions said. She said a conciliation committee represented by heads of five factions was in session looking for ways to break the deadlock and that her party would stand firm on its demands to chair at least 10 parliamentary committees and on the principle of proportional representation in parliament, the Supreme Rada. The pro-Russia party decided to take the action after the "orange" trio of the pro-presidential Our Ukraine bloc, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and the Socialists had formed a coalition and agreed on nominees for the posts of prime minister and parliamentary speaker. Another party member, Taras Chernovol, accused prime minister-designate Tymoshenko of frustrating the agreements reached Tuesday at a meeting between the three coalition parties, the opposition and the president. "We almost resolved all disputable issues, including those on the distribution of committees, but Tymoshenko deliberately frustrated them, forwarding the idea of establishing extra commissions not covered by regulations," he said.
