The decision is taken to begin salmon fishing on the western Kamchatka coast
The decision is taken to begin salmon fishing on the western Kamchatka coast, the regional administration press service told Itar-Tass on Thursday. The Veterinary and Phytosanitary surveillance agency (Rosselkhoznadzor) has started giving permitting documents to companies that gained fishing quotas. The fishing will take place on 75 river areas and 157 large sea nets. It is planned to catch about 126,000 tonnes of salmon. Fishermen are allowed to catch a total of 188,000 tonnes of salmon in the peninsula region, including the eastern coast, where the fishing started in June, and the Koryak Autonomous Area. In the Kamchatka Region, 140 companies have the right to fish. It is 57 percent of the total number of fishing companies. This was the cause of actions of protest of fishermen who believe the fishing quotas were distributed unlawfully. The protesters put up a tent camp near the regional administration building in central Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Since June 5, they have demanded redistribution of fishing quotas and resignation of Governor Mikhail Mashkovtsev. No one of the demands was satisfied. The governor said the distribution was lawful, the tents of pickets were placed for provocative purposes and their demands were unfounded and did not reflect the will of most Kamchatka fishermen.
