Sergei Mironov has said he excludes the possibility under current circumstances of sending Russian troops to Iraq
The speaker of the Russian Federation Council, Sergei Mironov, has said he excludes the possibility under current circumstances of sending Russian troops to Iraq. He made the remarks during a press conference upon his return from a working trip to the Rostov region, where he met with local legislators and representatives of government and social agencies. 'The position of our government has been concretely stated, and there is no necessity of sending troops over there,' Mironov said. 'If the situation in Iraq comes under the sole jurisdiction of the UN, which entails the withdrawal of all so-called coalition forces, then that will be a different question.' In addition, Mironov again insisted on the evacuation of Russian citizens from Iraq, 'insofar as the government is unable to guarantee their safety.'
