Moscow court passed sentences on Wednesday in a case on the attack on NTV producer Elkhan Mirzoyev
A Moscow court passed sentences on Wednesday in a case on the attack on NTV producer Elkhan Mirzoyev. The court found Vyacheslav Barketov and Vitaly Golikov guilty of inflicting minor bodily harm and sentenced them to one and a half year in settlement colony each. They assaulted Mirzoyev in the Moscow underground, hitting him on the head with a beer bottle. “We did not expect such rigorous punishment,” Prosecutor Yelena Savina said. She had asked the court to give Barketov and Golikov suspended sentences of two years each. Mirzoyev in turn said that the assault on him was ethnically motivated. “I am satisfied with the punishment ruled by the court for the defendants. As I had said, nationalism must be punished strictly,” he told ITAR-TASS. He added that he had a human pity for the defendants, but would “insist in an appeal court on recognising the punishment lawful and valid”. Lawyers of the defendants said that they would appeal the sentences, arguing that the attack had an ethnic motive.
