Russia's security forces foiled terrorist plans targeting the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg at the weekend
Russia's security forces foiled terrorist plans targeting the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg at the weekend, the country's security chief said Tuesday. "The plans and objectives hatched by terrorist leaders and extremist organizations to thwart the summit in St. Petersburg were uncovered and prevented," said Nikolai Patrushev, the head of the Federal Security Service. Opening the third session of the new national anti-terrorism committee, Patrushev said that security groups had been on high alert both at the summit venue and in the troubled North Caucasus region. The leaders of Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Japan and Canada met in a suburb of Russia's second city on July 15-17.
