The Georgian parliament passed by a unanimous vote on Tuesday a resolution on the pullout of Russian peacekeeping forces from the areas of Abkhazia and South Ossetian conflicts. The resolution does not set a timeline for the “beginning of the process of the withdrawal of the peacekeeping forces from the territory of Georgia”, but the parliament has commissioned the government “to immediately begin procedures to stop the peacekeeping operation in Abkhazia and the former South Ossetia Autonomous Area, and move out of Georgia the peacekeeping contingent that is present in the country under the CIS auspices”. The Georgian Foreign Ministry will attend to a law basis for the peacekeeper pullout and demand the denunciation of the 1994 agreement on the introduction of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces in the area of the Abkhazian conflict and of the 1992 agreement on the presence of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces in the area of the South Ossetian conflict. Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba told ITAR-TASS that the “leaders of the CIS countries are to make a decision on the presence of the peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone”. “One of the sides in the conflict can raise the question of the withdrawal of the peacekeeping forces, but a final decision should be made at the level of the CIS heads of state,” he stressed. “The Russian peacekeepers will stay on in the zone of the South Ossetian conflict regardless of the decision of the Georgian parliament,” South Ossetia’s leader Eduard Kokoity in turn said. “Just Russia is a guarantor of peace and stability, and we are very grateful to it for this,” he said.
