The number of terrorist attacks in Russia in the first half of 2006 was 20% lower than in the same period of last year
The number of terrorist attacks in Russia in the first half of 2006 was 20% lower than in the same period of last year, a deputy interior minister said Friday. Andrei Novikov said this positive trend had emerged due to the country's new counter-terrorism system. "During the first half of the year, 68 terrorist attacks were recorded, which is less than in the same period of last year," he said. He also said the number of extremist crimes had doubled, totaling 73 in January-June 2006. Novikov said some 19,000 crimes had been solved in January-June 2006, and 6,500 people involved in these crimes had been identified. The deputy minister said 3,500 economic crimes had been solved, and 200 perpetrators brought to justice during the period, 40% more than last year. He also said activities of the Russian law enforcement agencies had helped reduce the number of murders, car thefts, and other grave crimes.
