Powerful explosions partially destroyed six cell phone relay stations in Chechnya over the weekend
Powerful explosions partially destroyed six cell phone relay stations in Chechnya over the weekend, the republic's interior ministry said Monday. Bombs went off simultaneously at five relay stations of Russian mobile phone operator MegaFon early on Sunday, and one more retransmitting facility was hit by a blast in the evening, ministry officials said. They said the explosions, caused by an estimated 300-400 gram TNT equivalent, had inflicted serious damage on the stations' equipment, but had not disrupted their operations. Investigators are working to establish the motives of what seems to be a well-coordinated attack.
