Russia's Transportation Ministry said Thursday it would impose no restrictions on flights of Russian airlines to the United Kingdom following a major terrorism alert in London
"No restrictions will be introduced but, given the situation, Russian airports will increase security during passport and luggage control procedures," a ministry spokesman said. London police reported a terrorist plot involving up to 21 people had been foiled. They said the suspects had planned to bring explosives on board of planes in hand luggage and set them off on flights to the United States. The British Airways Web site said its London-bound flights from Moscow Thursday had been cancelled, as had one from St. Petersburg, but Russian airlines Transaero and Aeroflot said they were flying to the U.K. as scheduled. Flights all around Europe into London have also been cancelled. U.K. Home Secretary John Reid said the alleged terrorists had planned to inflict a "considerable loss of life." The Department for Transport has already prohibited carry-on on board planes and banned almost any liquid - even bottled baby milk is subjected to restrictions - from being taken onto aircraft in connection with fears that the alleged terrorists were seeking to detonate a liquid-based explosive device.
