The Japanese fishing schooner Kisshin-maru 31, aboard which one fisherman was killed when a Russian patrol boat sought to detain it, is being escorted to the port of Yuzhno-Kurilsk on Kunashir island, an official at the Sapporo-based Russian Consulate-General told. A gunshot wound in the head was found on the dead fisherman from the Japanese schooner, the public relations group of the Sakhalin coast guard department of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday. The criminal case over the assassination of border service Maj-Gen Vitaly Gamov was sent to the Sakhalin regional court, the press service of the Sakhalin prosecutor's office reported. Meanwhile, Japan's Maritime Safety Agency official told that the incident had occurred at 07:40, local time. The Japanese boat, which had engaged in crabbing operations, was detained in the Habomai islands' southern area, which is directly adjacent to the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Japan's Coast Guard sent two patrol boats to the scene of the exchange of fire to collect information.
