Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev ordered to take under special control the investigation into the murder in the Altai territory of the journalist from Omsk and his wife. Their Mitsubishi car was found later 140 kilometers from the scene of the incident. According to preliminary information, money, a video camera and some other valuable things disappeared. The victims were identified only on Wednesday with the help of Omsk’s traffic police by the car’s license plate. The fate of the children is unknown. Petrov, 31, a graduate of the Department of Journalism at Moscow State University, is the son of Itar-Tass correspondent in the Omsk region, Anatoly Petrov. He worked for Moskovskiye Novosti daily and in the past several years was editor-in-chief of the magazine Pravo Na Vybor (Right to Choose), which is published by the regional election commission. His wife, Alyona, taught at the Department of Foreign Languages at Omsk State University. Criminal proceedings have been instituted under Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code (murder). The investigation is underway.
