The Moscow City Court on Thursday sentenced Yukos security officer Alexei Pichugin to 24 years
The Moscow City Court on Thursday sentenced Yukos security officer Alexei Pichugin to 24 years, finding him guilty of masterminding murders. Pichugin's lawyers said they would appeal. The other defendants were given various prison terms, from 7.5 to 19 years in maximum security penitentiary. "The defendants' guilt is fully proven and confirmed by evidence and case materials," the verdict said. When passing the verdict, the court took into account mitigating circumstances, such as the fact that the defendant has small children. Pichugin's lawyers said they would lodge an appeal. "The court did not offer proofs of our client's guilt; it only acknowledged the prosecutor's arguments, so we regard this verdict as ungrounded," lawyer Georgy Kaganer said. The sentence can be appealed at a higher court within the next ten days. Under the previous verdict, Pichugin was sentenced to 20 years.
