Beijing-Moscow car race participants, who arrived to Russia on Saturday, visited Ivanovo on Monday
Beijing-Moscow car race participants, who arrived in Moscow on Saturday, visited Ivanovo on Monday. The jeeps that had traveled about 15,000 kilometres across Russia rolled into Ivanovo, a city known for its calicos, in order to visit a children’s home where children of many prominent 20th century politicians, including Mao Zedong, had studied and lived in the past. The history of the unique institution, which was a shelter, school and home for children from many countries for many years, started on May 1, 1931 when the first stone was laid in its foundation. Two years later the International Children’s Home received the first pupils – orphans and children of political prisoners from different countries. About 5,000 children of almost 100 nationalities from 80 countries have been brought up there since then. Personnel say that their graduates do not forget Ivanovo and the years spent at the children’s home. In 2003, former Prime Minister Zhou Enlai’s niece, the daughters of Marshals Peng Dehuai and He Long, and poet and revolutionary Emmy Xiao came to the Russian embassy in Beijing for the presentation of a new book titled “My Father Mao Zedong”, written by his daughter Lin Min. All of them still speak Russian, the language of their childhood, and remember lyrics from the Russian song Katyusha. Now new voices are heard in the children’s home and new children sing new songs. “But history is a common memory of mankind and it helps people and countries understand that will the difference in languages and customs, we are all the children of one home called Earth,” China Radio International reporter Yuan Tinglei said. The car race participants will return to Moscow in the evening. They will take part in a welcoming ceremony in Moscow on September 4.
