Tide of surrogate alcohol poisonings has swept Central Russia
A tide of surrogate alcohol poisonings has swept Central Russia. Cases of mass hospitalization have been registered in three regions. Itar-Tass correspondent in Voronezh Yuri Khots reports the number of those affected by an alcohol-containing liquid of unknown origin in the Novokhopersk and Pavlovsk districts of the Voronezh Region over the past two days has reached 55. In the Novokhopersk district 31 persons, including five women, remain in hospital. One patient is an intensive care ward. The condition of others is said to be medium grave. The law enforcement agencies have begun investigating the incident. Six outlets where the substandard bootleg alcohol was purchased have been identified. In the Pavlovsk district, all those affected have liver intoxication symptoms. In Rzhev, surrogate alcohol is responsible for 52 poisoning cases, including three lethal ones. The diagnosis says the toxic intoxication of the lever was to blame, reports Itar-Tass correspondent in Tver Alexander Kharchenko. In the city of Stary Oskol, the Belgorod Region, 110 people have been poisoned and two died after taking an alcohol-containing mixture with unknown additives. Several similar poisoning cases occurred in the neighboring town of Gubkin, Shevchenko said. According to Interior Ministry estimates, an annual 42,000 suffer surrogate alcohol poisonings a year.
